Descriptions of Yoga Styles currently offered at APYC appear below in the following alphabetical order:
Anusara Yoga® classes are spiritually
oriented, life-affirming classes in which Anusara Yoga Universal Principles of
Alignment™ are integrated into poses and sequences to help open the body, mind
and heart in the most optimal way for each person. In this intermediate/advanced
level class, you will deepen and empower your yoga practice by refining the
poses you know, while working toward more challenging yoga poses, including
deeper backbends, inversions and arm balances. We will warm and open the body,
mind and heart to prepare for this practice, working toward an apex pose or
poses in each class. No two classes are the same! Adjustments, demonstrations
and/or partner work may be done in class to help reveal deeper joy through the
body. APYC's Anusara Yoga® teacher is Laura Spriggs.
Gentle Yoga is appropriate for all levels of practice. It is a therapeutic yoga practice that works for EVERY body. Repeated movements release tension in the upper, middle and lower back and we focus on relaxing the neck and shoulders. Each person discovers movements that benefit their body. Many students report a release of stress and a sense of serenity and peace after the practice. APYC's Gentle Yoga Instructor is Dona Robinson.
Go with the Flow is an all levels eclectic class where we will feel free to explore lots of different asanas, flows and yogic practices without being bound to any one style. There will be lots of flowing vinyasa as well as some in depth work on basic postures. We'll work with pranayama (breathing exercises), explore the Chakras and try to reinforce the meditative and spiritual aspects of our yoga practice. There will be some more advanced work from time to time, but modifications will be taught to those who desire them. Most of all it is my intention to structure the class to meet the needs of the people in the room. APYC's Go with the Flow Instructor is Mike Camp.
Hatha classes are based on the traditional style, incorporating pranayama (different techniques of directional breathing), meditation and a smooth sequencing of postures (asanas). Classes begin with several minutes of meditation and pranayama to calm and center the mind. The practice includes gentle to deep stretches at the start, progressing in a manner that offers many poses together in the seated, reclined, prone and standing positions. The intention is to build warmth and strength incrementally in the body by slowly inviting the muscles and connective tissues to respond, hopefully, avoiding injury. Reaching the final resting posture of savasana; the bliss state of yoga (the 8th limb), feeling relaxed from the energizing effects of the practice is the goal. All levels of experience are welcome. Classes are structured to meet the needs of the student and are different each time. APYC's Hatha Instructor is Rosa O'Connor.
Hot Vinyasa has the same inner focus that is the core of yoga, and the same spiritually uplifting attitude as all our classes, but at about 95 degrees! Hot is good! Sweating is healthy and cleansing. The high heat also helps us increase flexibility of muscles. We do a nice flow of basic yoga postures, with a focus on purifying the system, and increasing flexibility. Unlike our other classes, drinking water at room temperature is encouraged in this class. We want to keep the body hydrated, but not cool down our core temperature, so NO ICE! Also, please bring a beach towel, and of course your own mat! As you can tell, most of us perspire heavily in this classes. Please, you must consider yourself "fairly fit" with normal blood pressure and be near your healthy weight to attend the Hot Vinyasa classes. Call us if in doubt. APYC's Hot Vinyasa Instructor is Jen Xanders.

APYC's PreNatal Yoga Instructor is Carrie Sea.
An introductory PreNatal Yoga class is held on the first
Wednesday of the even numbered months from 7:00-8:15pm.
2012 introductory PreNatal Yoga dates ~ February 1st,
April 4th, June 6th, August 1st, October 3rd, & December 5th.
Frequetly Asked PreNatal Yoga Questions... What stages of pregnancy are appropriate for this PreNatal Yoga class? Carrie welcomes all stages of pregnancy in this class. What should I wear? Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. What should I bring? Please bring a yoga mat if you have one. All People Yoga Center has loaner mats and any other prop that you might need. If you have a favorite pillow, please bring it with you! Can I start the class now or do I need to wait for the next introductory class? This class is ongoing, so feel free to start at any time. To help you understand the value of this yoga practice throughout your pregnancy, we highly recommend that you attend the Introductory Class when it is next offered (see above and the Class Schedule page for exact dates). There are several exercises in this class, that we believe deserve a longer explanation (than time in an ongoing class allows). It also give you plenty of time to ask questions, and get a good Idea of what is safe to do and what you should watch out for! If you will be starting in mid session, remember to ask questions before and after class to clarify anything you are not understanding, and always modify postures as needed, there isn't any set of postures that will be right for all pregnant women, so if we do something that doesn't feel right, please feel free to omit the posture completely, make up your own variation, or just do whatever feels right to you in that moment. Please contact Carrie Viehe directly at doulacarrie@gmail.com or 317.496.1303 if you have additional PreNatal Yoga questions. __________________
Restorative Yoga - In this gentle, all levels practice, we will explore a variety of dynamic and static yoga postures that increase flexibility, enhance relaxation and recharge the spirit. Props are an integral part of this class, allowing the body to be supported in ways that allow it to "melt" into a posture. We will also hold many postures for several minutes at a time, connecting with the breath and encouraging release of chronically tight areas of the body. Other techniques we will explore include: visualization, guided meditation and breathing techniques for relaxation/stress relief. No prior yoga experience is necessary for this class and it is suitable for practice following your favorite morning yoga session. APYC's Restorative Yoga Instructor is Dona Robinson.
Restorative Yoga classes are held on the third Saturday of each month from 2:30-4:00pm.

end of class, following savasana, to sit in padmasana, lotus pose, the
ultimate hip opener, or a comfortable variation, for several minutes of
meditation.

The fundamentals of proper alignment will be stressed, and use of props will be encouraged to support the body and make the poses comfortable.
