Dynamic Kripalu Yoga is the yoga of consciousness, compassion, and self-awareness. Students are encouraged to honor their body's individual needs to enable us to open to the energy of life. Learn to connect the mind, body and spirit through awareness in the postures. Kripalu yoga is a gentle, flowing style of Hatha Yoga, focusing on breath awareness, inner focus, and utilizing the brilliant "press point" method.
APYC's Dynamic Kripalu Instructor is Lorissa Byely.

Gentle Yoga is appropriate for all levels of practice. Repeated movements bring circulation into the joints of the body. We increase our capacity to breathe comfortably by stretching all the muscles around the lungs. People doing Gentle Yoga report improved digestion. Gentle Yoga increases the flexibility and circulation of the feet and hands. We also stretch the upper, middle and lower back. Gentle exercises release tension in the neck and shoulders.

It is a therapeutic yoga practice that works for EVERY body. The focus for each person is to discover movements that benefit their body. We begin with breath awareness. We explore the movement of muscles in the body as we focus on the movement of the breath. Learning to be present with the breath allows focus and is calming to our minds. Many students report a sense of serenity and peace after the practice. Keeping the mind focused on the breath can reduce stress. The breath is adapted to each person’s specific needs.

Repeated movements help our bodies explore the benefit of the experience. With repetition the body “warms up to the experience” and DISCOVERS new ways of stretching. Some poses are held to strengthen tendons, ligaments and muscles. Gentle Yoga can be adapted to meet specific needs of students. We can focus on lower back stabilization and stretching. Neck and shoulders are common areas of tension, so we do a series of movements to release tension in the neck and shoulders.
APYC's Gentle Yoga Instructor is Dona Robinson.

Go with the Flow is an all levels eclectic class where we will feel free to explore lots of different asanas, flows and yogic practices without being bound to any one style. There will be lots of flowing vinyasa as well as some in depth work on basic postures. We'll work with pranayama (breathing exercises), explore the Chakras and try to reinforce the meditative and spiritual aspects of our yoga practice. There will be some more advanced work from time to time, but modifications will be taught to those who desire them. Most of all it is my intention to structure the class to meet the needs of the people in the room each Sunday morning.
APYC's Go with the Flow Instructor is Mike Camp.

Hot Vinyasa has the same inner focus that is the core of yoga, and the same spiritually uplifting attitude as all our classes, but at about 95 degrees! Hot is good! Sweating is healthy and cleansing. The high heat also helps us increase flexibility of muscles. We do a nice flow of basic yoga postures, with a focus on purifying the system, and increasing flexibility. Unlike our other classes, drinking water at room temperature is encouraged in this class. We want to keep the body hydrated, but not cool down our core temperature, so NO ICE! Also, please bring a beach towel, and of course your own mat! As you can tell, most of us perspire heavily in this classes. Please, you must consider yourself "fairly fit" with normal blood pressure and be near your healthy weight to attend the Hot Vinyasa classes. Call us if in doubt.
APYC's Hot Vinyasa Instructor is Amy Thomas.

Frequetly Asked PreNatal Yoga Questions...

What stages of pregnancy are appropriate for this PreNatal Yoga class?
Carrie welcomes all stages of pregnancy in this class.

What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

What should I bring?
Please bring a yoga mat if you have one. All People Yoga Center has loaner mats and any other prop that you might need. If you have a favorite pillow, please bring it with you!

Can I start the class now or do I need to wait for the next introductory class?
This class is ongoing, so feel free to start at any time.

To help you understand the value of this yoga practice throughout your pregnancy, we highly recommend that you attend the Introduction Class when it is next offered (see above and the Class Schedule page for exact dates). There are several exercises in this class, that we believe deserve a longer explanation (than time in an ongoing class allows). It also give you plenty of time to ask questions, and get a good Idea of what is safe to do and what you should watch out for!

If you will be starting in mid session, remember to ask questions before and after class to clarify anything you are not understanding, and always modify postures as needed, there isn't any set of postures that will be right for all pregnant women, so if we do something that doesn't feel right, please feel free to omit the posture completely, make up your own variation, or just do whatever feels right to you in that moment.

Please contact Carrie Viehe directly at doulacarrie@gmail.com or 317.496.1303 if you have additional PreNatal Yoga questions.

Restorative Yoga - In this gentle, all levels practice, we will explore a variety of dynamic and static yoga postures that increase flexibility, enhance relaxation and recharge the spirit. Props are an integral part of this class, allowing the body to be supported in ways that allow it to "melt" into a posture. We will also hold many postures for several minutes at a time, connecting with the breath and encouraging release of chronically tight areas of the body. Other techniques we will explore include: visualization, guided meditation and breathing techniques for relaxation/stress relief. No prior yoga experience is necessary for this class and it is suitable for practice following your favorite morning yoga session.
APYC's Restorative Yoga Instructor is Dona Robinson.

Restorative Yoga classes are held on the third Saturday of each month from 2:30-4:00pm.
Future 2008 classes will be held on: September 20th,
October 18th, November 15th & December 20th!

Vinyasa connects the postures (asanas) with breath synchronized movements, building a great deal of beneficial heat. A special audible & focusing breath (ujjayi) is used to flow through the practice. It is a challenging & athletic style of yoga.

Warm Flexibility Heat allows our muscles to stretch more easily and comfortably. We take full advantage of this in our warm flexibility class, heating the room to the high 80s or low 90s. Gentler than a hot vinyasa class, this class focuses on holding stretchy poses for longer periods of time. The intensity of the class is appropriate for all students who are comfortable with a little heat.
APYC's Warm Flexibility Instructor is Lisa Meece.

Yoga Basics is an introductory class for people at all levels of fitness. Students will learn to breathe fully, and to use the breath both on and off the yoga mat. The fundamentals of proper alignment will be stressed, and use of props will be encouraged to support the body and make the poses comfortable.
APYC's Yoga Basics Instructors are:
Holly Haskett
Nancy Schalk

Yoga for Every Body is designed for people who have difficulty sitting on the mat or doing poses on their knees. The class includes breathing exercises for relaxation and stretching. We stand on the mat for balance and strengthening sequences which can benefit students at any level. Sometimes a chair is used for support in the standing poses. It is a complete class with forward bends, twists, lateral stretches and subtle chest openers.
APYC's Yoga for Every Body Instructor is Dona Robinson.

Yoga for Flexibility uses the breath and stretching to open the body gently, creating space for health and healing to happen naturally. Appropriate for all levels of fitness and flexibility, with emphasis on relieving the stiffness and tension so common in modern life.
APYC's Yoga for Flexibility Instructor is Lisa Meece.

Yoga Organics - promotes strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance by means of coordinated breathing and poses that place emphasis on precise body alignment. Through rhythmic breathing and concentration on the poses, the practice itself becomes a meditation. Because every body is different, props such as blocks, straps, and even walls are utilized to enable everyone to achieve alignment in the poses, whatever their physical structure, age, and level of flexibility.
APYC's Yoga Organics Instructor is Sondra Molnar.

Yoga Therapy - All yoga is healing and therapeutic, YOGA THERAPY uses yoga specifically and purposefully for healing and is geared to the individual needs of each student. We move all the joints, gently and with breath, to their current comfortable full range of motion. We identify our imbalances and through practice bring all opposing muscle groups, our skeletal structure, and entire being into balance and comfort. Nancy Schalk and Holly Haskett are your instructors, they can help you develop a series of healing movements that you can practice regularly at home. If you suffer with chronic pain, are recovering from injury, illness or surgery, or if exercise generally is too strenuous for you, please give our Yoga Therapy class a try. Many are having great results from this gentle, thorough, deeply relaxing practice. Do try to make it to the "restorative relaxation meditation" that we offer before the main class. However, if your schedule does not allow that, you can join us just for the main practice and still get wonderful results.
